Viva Nutso!
Posted by Ben Masten at 2007-11-20 13:41:20

Hope you guys like the Arsonists Guild piece we put up this week. Sam, Gerrit and I wrote it together, and I think it's a really good example of how comfortable we've gotten with collaborating over the years.

The three of us have pretty different sensibilities, and while there's always been some overlap, when we first were working together on the radio show in College, it took us a little while to feel out the middle ground.

Now though, we're at a point where the three of us can crank out a good chunk of material just by sitting down and goofing around for an hour or so. In fact, I've found recently that what we come up with by just playing together is a lot funnier and comes a lot more easily than what I can write on my own. It never feels like work, because we now collaborate the same way we naturally interact anyway. Hopefully some of that sense of fun comes out in the end product.

Also, on a related note, I think I drew a pretty good pyromaniac squirrel.

Enjoy!

Clown Time Ain't Over, Mr. Costello
Posted by Sam Dingman at 2007-12-04 15:49:54

So, as you may have noted in nooze updates past, Audience of Two's performance wing has a gig coming up at the end of December.  We're part of a mash-up of loose takes on Dickens A Christmas Carol.  We'll be handling the part of the story where Jacob Marley visits Scrooge from the afterlife, and are very excited about our telling, which features magic teacups and a talking air-conditioner.

However, Gerrit and I recently had the opportunity to be a part of another performer's contribution to the festivities: a live-action/animation combo video of the first chapter of the story, told entirely by clowns.  I'm proud to present the initial design for the poster, which is below.  A special prize will be awarded to the first commenter who can find me and Gerrit in the picture...

Our Secret Republican Identities
Posted by Gerrit at 2007-12-05 10:12:17

We had a spirited discussion the other night about which Republican presidential candidates best embody the various 2loggers.  For instance, I'm Ron Paul, because I'm a lunatic.  Masten, much to his chagrin, has been pegged for Romney.

This leaves Lux2, Sweeney, Sam, Winston, and Flav to be matched with McCain, Giuliani, Thompson, Huckabee, Hunter, Tancredo, and Tagg Romney.

It's the devil's dance, folks... time to pair up.

You Oughta Be in Pictures
Posted by Ben Masten at 2007-12-12 09:29:24

I've been off the radar so far this week, but that's partially because of all the work Sam, Gerrit and I have been doing on the new video. This one's been a beast to put together. With everything else we've shot, we've either had outside help or been in a moving car with no room for fancy-pants equipment. This time around we've had to do everything ourselves AND try to maintain those "production values" that all the kids seem to be into these days.

On previous shoots our collective butt has been saved by our good friend Bill Buckendorf, who has his own light kit, camera and microphones, and also the patience of a saint. He's much in demand among other, more established NYC comedy types and with good reason. He works quickly, he's professional, and he's great at his job.

Oh man, we miss Bill.

That said, we're still having a blast shooting this thing-- from scrounging equipment to planning a shot list to dressing the set, we've done a pretty good job of learning as we go. I fell in love with our neighborhood hardware store when I found out they'd sell me two of these babies for about 30 bucks. We snagged a tripod from my improv buddy Jamie Cummings. Winston and LuX2 went beyond the call of duty and showed up this morning for a 7:30 outdoor shoot before work.

I think the end product will hold up pretty well. But it's been really labor intensive.

Photos to come.

Listen, No One Looks Good At 3 in the Morning
Posted by Ben Masten at 2007-12-13 14:11:22

For those of you not into baseball or politics, here's some photos from the video shoots we did earlier this week. They aren't blurry, they're just shot in special "all-nighter-vision" to simulate the full experience.

Sam after we finished the first night of shooting. Awfully damned chipper for 3AM.

And on the second night. Also at 3 AM. The hours started to catch up with us a little.

Here I am half out of costume; pretending to do something interesting and funny just so I can get my photo taken.

Gerrit models a possible Scrooge costume. Revised a bit since then. Netflix!

And S+G's apartment when we finally finished. Movies is messy.

Breakfast Fish Liner Notes
Posted by Ben Masten at 2007-12-21 15:11:21

Man, are we glad that's finished.

After working on Breakfast Fish more or less nonstop for two weeks, It's done, it's up, and it's being screened live over the holidays.

It's hard to know how to feel about it this soon after the fact. There's a lot of things I personally really like about it, and just as many things I wish we could have tightened up given more time. That said, It's definitely the most technically ambitious thing we've ever put together, and we're proud of having done the whole thing from scratch.

To cut some questions off at the pass:

1. It's as long as it is because we wanted to do the Gene Frankel Theater gig, but we were pretty sure most or all of us would be gone over the Holidays. So we figured we'd shoot a movie instead of putting together  new live material that we might not be able to perform.

2. The story starts and stops where it does because that's the chunk of the Christmas Carol story the folks at the theater assigned us. Hopefully we managed to get our segment to stand pretty well on its own for your Internet viewing pleasure.

And now, MORE PHOTOS!

Me n' Sam editing the flick in the luxurious Ao2 offices

Sam recording the Air Conditioner dialogue

That's in the AM, motherfuckers. That last day of editing took about 14 hours. Ouch.

Wrap party!  Late night beer and turkey burgers!  Here's Gerrit Workin' the ol' George Foreman.

My personal hygiene is usually better when I haven't been editing for three days.

Getcher own burger, Dingman.

Hope you like the flick everybody! As always, spread it around!

New Movies!
Posted by Ben Masten at 2008-01-22 01:55:24

After realizing we could do the whole thing in about 40 minutes, we actually went ahead and shot a bunch of RoboMamet. Look for more of these in the days to come.

And since Flav is such a smartass, you can now look forward to Lionboy: Boy Lion. Keep an eye out later this week.

Now that we've finally executed some of the unusable ideas,  we've probably broken the Seventh Seal or something. Sorry about that.

Will Write Jokes for Nachos
Posted by Ben Masten at 2008-01-23 02:05:46

It’s 2:37 AM, and I want pancakes.

I don’t sleep a lot. Two things happen when I don’t sleep: Either I’ll get a half formed idea for a sketch or some bigger project, or I suddenly experience the kind of absurdly specific food cravings usually reserved for pregnant women. So I either write or I eat. Or, after I’ve eating everything in the house, I write about eating.

As Sam mentioned yesterday, he used to work a night shift job at a hotel. That meshed nicely with my insomnia. We’d call each other up most nights, knowing full well we were the only two people we knew who were probably awake. Most nights I would protest that I was actually going to bed any minute (a defense which Sam, correctly, never believed), but one night, I think I surprised him.

“I’m making eggs,” I said, standing over a frying pan.
“You’re what?” said Sam.
“I scrambled in a little whole grain mustard and a dash of Tabasco. You know, to give ‘em a deviled kind of flavor.”
“Why are you making deviled eggs at two in the morning?”
“I was hungry.”
“Can you talk?”
“I’ll call you after I eat.”

Audience of Two as a whole has a pretty strong history of late-night snackage. One night during our freshman year, we were finishing a script about an hour before the radio show was supposed to air. Sam, Gerrit and I were so engrossed in arguing about the best way to write a particular joke, that we neglected to notice Flav unobtrusively helping himself to Sam and Gerrit’s takeout dinner. Flav, ever respectful of the creative process (and the fact that we were starting to yell), calmly waited for a break in the conversation to tell us the delicate news himself.

“Hey Guys,” he said, “I ate all your Chinese food.”

The three of us turned around. He had. All of it. The takeout cartons looked like they had been vacuumed clean. We were more impressed than anything else.

Other Ao2 sessions were fueled by nachos at Iron Hill Brewery. These were no mere mortal appetizer. They arrived on a plate of chips, cheese, and meat that probably qualified as a small landmass. On one occasion the entire Ao2 writing staff put away four helpings of Iron Hill nachos at one sitting.  Our waitress was horrified. More than likely, we stopped at Krispy Kreme on the way home.

Then there was Tom Jones, an all-night diner that was about ten minutes away from our school, and where every single surface was upholstered in bright orange Naugahyde. For two bucks and change, you could order a blue ribbon special: bottomless coffee, two eggs, two pancakes, toast, bacon, sausage, and juice. We never visited outside the hours between Two and Four AM. Why the hell would you?

In four years, Tom Jones was only closed once. We drove there for Gerrit’s birthday one night in the middle of a blizzard. There were already several inches of snow on the ground, and more was blanketing down, horizontally at times. Our dismay turned to admiration when we found out they weren’t closed because of the blizzard, but because their fryer was dead.

We almost went off the road going to Denny’s instead. It wasn’t the same, especially compared to the mjaesty of the Blue Ribbon Special. But I'd still take their pancakes right now.

Lionboy!
Posted by Ben Masten at 2008-01-25 16:21:05

So apparently all I have to do to win a points contest is write about nachos.

Huh.

Anyways, hope you guys are enjoying Lionboy. This one was fun. Like most things we do, it came from all of us dicking around when we were supposed to be working on something else. Lionboy surfaced around three in the morning during one of the shoots for the Christmas special, and has been popping up ever since. Flav sorta kinda transcribed one of the conversations in which Lionboy recently appeared, so we figured we'd just sit down and record it for a change. On our external hard drive there is now way more footage of me and Sam waxing poetic than any sane human being would want to watch.

Also, if you do those voices for long enough, your head starts to hurt.

2uote of the Day From a Man for All Blogs
Posted by Sam Dingman at 2008-02-08 17:02:04

A salute, dear 2logjammers, to Ben K, who we were proud to have as our first guest 2logger this week.  As expected, he owned us all over the place, finishing well ahead in this week's points competition.  You should check out all of this work at these fine sites: River Avenue Blues, Second Avenue Sagas, and Little Town Blues.  He is a man who loves his avenues and sings his blues.

In the spirit of concession to a more worthy opponent, it is my distinct honor to attribute today's 2uote of the Day to Mr. BK:

"That's also my thinking on the perceived aggression coming out of Putin's Russia these days."
