2log + 2log usually equals 4log. Except when it equals 5. Log.
For example, look at today's headline: When Mars Attacks, Giuliani's ready.
Lets ignore, for a moment, the fact this headline uses a comma to make the "ready" a possession of Rudy's. Lets also ignore the fact that the message contains a promise of protection from a threat even more intangible then the war on terror (in this case: aliens. Next week: Cyclops Overlords).
But lets focus instead on the fact that I read that headline and wasn't even sort of surprised. Oh, right, I thought. Rudy is extending 9/11 to the next logical thing that it has nothing to do with: extra-terrestrial life. Duh. Not even a surprise. I have no doubt that the Giuliani machine has a complete plan for when Aliens attack. What really steams my clams is that this is just about the same logic that people use for the war on terror. And you know what? Turns out, if you say things enough times, they get to be true.
You know who's really worried about being attacked by terrorists? My auntie Myrtle down in Alabama (editors note: Myrtle does not, technically, exist). She doesn’t live within 30 miles of another human being, except for old Ed Fisher who doesn’t get out much himself. And you know who's not worried as much about terrorism? New Yorkers. The people who are the most at risk of getting terroristed. But if you mention terrorism enough, 9/11 enough, and Aliens enough, (or mention enough that 2+2 occasionally equals five) the country drops what its doing an starts planning what to do when the Aliens land.
Me? I plan to run around on fire.
