I overheard the following exchange working on hurricane cleanup in upstate NY. Many local organizations had generously joined forces to set up a feeding station for those in need at the neighborhood church. After about a week, a Department of Health representative showed up to "help."
DOH Worker: Excuse me, ma'am, are you wearing gloves?
Volunteer: No, I'm just preparing the hamburger for the grill.
DOH Worker: Are you aware that's against health code? We may need to shut this place down.
Volunteer: [thinking quickly] You can't do that. This is just a... a big family barbecue! Why, we've been planning it for months!
The DOH worker jotted something in his notebook and walked away sullenly.
