Contra Shay's optimism, the New Year has started with some depressing news. Semiconductor Today reports the demand for cathode ray tubes continues to drop, amidst a recession, explosion in LCD technology, bad environmental news, and dwindling materials.

We all recall the innocent days of yore, when the CRT barons lived awash excesses rivalling Xanadu. The future was brighter than a CRT display, and society pages teemed with gossip of industry tycoons. For a brief time, America contemplated minting money emblazoned "In Cathode We Trust."
I hereby call for a $300 BILLION dollar bailout of the beleagured cathode ray industry, to keep our future bright.
